About the image tampering detector

The image tampering detector inspects a photo for traces that it was changed after capture. It reads EXIF metadata — the device, timestamps and software recorded by cameras — and runs error-level analysis (ELA) to reveal regions that were saved at a different compression level from their surroundings. Together, these signals help you decide whether an image deserves a closer, manual look.

What the tool examines

  • Metadata — camera model, capture and modification dates, and any editing-software fingerprints.
  • Error-level analysis — highlights areas whose compression differs from the rest of the image.
  • Noise consistency — checks whether sensor noise is uniform across the frame.
  • Software traces — flags when a known image editor last saved the file.

How to interpret the results

Read the output as a set of leads, not a verdict. Missing metadata is common and harmless — messaging apps and social platforms routinely strip it from perfectly genuine photos. Likewise, error-level analysis naturally lights up edges, text and high-contrast areas even in untouched images. A pasted signature or a swapped figure often shows sharp rectangular boundaries or noticeably different brightness in the ELA view, but confirming manipulation still requires human judgement and context the tool does not have.

Modern editing and AI generation can produce images with very few artefacts, while ordinary re-saving can make honest images look suspicious. That is exactly why we report a confidence indicator and a list of observations rather than a binary 'fake or real' stamp.

Best inputs for analysis

ELA is most informative on original JPEG files. If an image has already been screenshotted, resized, or passed through several apps, much of the useful compression history is lost, and results become harder to interpret. Whenever possible, analyse the original file straight from the source device.
