Understanding Indian Number Plates
A typical Indian vehicle registration number (like DL 01 C 1234) consists of four distinct parts:
- Part 1 (State Code): The first two letters represent the state or union territory where the vehicle is registered (e.g., DL for Delhi, MH for Maharashtra).
- Part 2 (District Code): The next two digits represent the specific RTO (Regional Transport Office) within that state (e.g., 01 for Central Delhi).
- Part 3 (Unique Series): This alphanumeric part (one, two, or three letters) represents the current series being issued by the RTO.
- Part 4 (Sequential Number): The final four digits are a unique number assigned to the vehicle (ranging from 0001 to 9999).
