Every time you do an NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS transfer in India, you use an IFSC code. But what do those 11 characters actually mean? Most people treat it as a random code โ€” but it has a very deliberate structure.

This guide decodes every part of an IFSC code so you can validate one on sight.

What is an IFSC Code?

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to every bank branch that participates in electronic fund transfer systems like:

Every bank branch in India that can receive online transfers has a unique IFSC code.

IFSC Code Structure: Character by Character

Let's take the example IFSC: HDFC0001234

PositionCharactersWhat It MeansExample
1โ€“4HDFCBank Code (4 uppercase letters)HDFC Bank
50Reserved โ€” always zero0 (future use)
6โ€“11001234Branch Code (6 alphanumeric)Specific branch

Characters 1โ€“4: The Bank Code

The first four characters are always uppercase English letters and represent the bank name. This is assigned by the RBI and is consistent across all branches of that bank nationwide.

Bank CodeBank Name
HDFCHDFC Bank
SBINState Bank of India
ICICICICI Bank
KKBKKotak Mahindra Bank
UTIBAxis Bank
PUNBPunjab National Bank
BARBBank of Baroda
CNRBCanara Bank
YESBYes Bank
IOBAIndian Overseas Bank

Character 5: Always a Zero

The 5th character is always the digit 0 (zero), reserved by the RBI for future use. If you see any IFSC code where the 5th character is not zero, it is invalid.

This is one of the easiest validation checks โ€” an IFSC like HDFC1001234 fails immediately because position 5 is '1', not '0'.

Characters 6โ€“11: The Branch Code

The last six characters identify the specific branch. These can be letters, numbers, or a combination. Each bank has its own internal branch coding logic:

How to Validate an IFSC Code: 3 Quick Checks

Even before using a tool, you can mentally validate most IFSC codes:

  1. Length check: Exactly 11 characters โ€” no more, no less.
  2. First 4 characters: Must be uppercase letters (Aโ€“Z only).

Where to Find Your IFSC Code

IFSC vs MICR: What's the Difference?

IFSC is used for electronic transfers (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS). MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is a 9-digit code printed on cheques for cheque clearing. They are different systems serving different purposes โ€” MICR is being phased out in favor of digital-first IFSC-based transfers.

Is It Safe to Share Your IFSC Code?

Yes. The IFSC code identifies your bank branch โ€” it is not a secret. You share it whenever you receive money. It cannot be used to withdraw money from your account. Only your account number + IFSC together, combined with bank authorization, enable transfers โ€” and even then, only to your account (for incoming money).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an IFSC code become invalid?

Yes. When banks merge (e.g., multiple PSBs merged with SBI or PNB), old IFSC codes are phased out. Always verify your IFSC before making large transfers.

Do cooperative banks have IFSC codes?

Yes. All banks โ€” including cooperative, small finance, and payment banks โ€” that participate in RBI's electronic fund transfer systems have IFSC codes.

Is the IFSC code the same as a SWIFT code?

No. SWIFT codes (also called BIC codes) are used for international transfers. IFSC codes are used only within India for domestic electronic transfers.
